How to test your offer page on a phone, end to end, before a buyer finds what's broken.

For freelancers, consultants and solo operators. Short answer: take your own phone, switch off Wi-Fi, open the page the way a stranger would, and try to buy. Don't stop at "the page loads". Tap the main button, send the form or email, open the payment link, and check what arrives afterwards. Below: setup, six stages to walk through, what usually breaks, what to fix first, and a checklist you can copy.

Why the phone test matters

Many visitors to a small service page arrive on a phone, often from a link in a message, a social post or a search on the go. You probably built and checked the page on a laptop. The gap between those two is where buyers get lost: a button hidden under a cookie banner, a form that won't send, an email link that opens nothing, a payment page that times out. Nobody writes to tell you; they just leave.

Rule of thumb: if you haven't completed a test order on your own phone since the last change to the page, assume something on the path is broken until you check.

Setup (two minutes)

The walkthrough: six stages

1 · Load and first screen

Does the page show something useful within a few seconds? On the first screen, without scrolling, can you read what you sell, who it's for and the price or a way to see it? Does a cookie banner, chat bubble or pop-up cover the headline or the main button, and can you close it easily with a thumb? (Headline help: service page headline guide.)

2 · Reading

Is the text readable without zooming? Are lines short enough, and is there enough contrast in daylight? Does anything run off the right edge so the page scrolls sideways? Do tables and price boxes fit the screen, or are they cut off?

3 · Main button

Is the main button easy to find and big enough to tap with a thumb, without hitting a neighbouring link? Does it do what its label says? Tap it and note exactly where you land. (Wording help: call to action guide.)

4 · Form, email link or booking

If there's a form: does the right keyboard appear for email and phone fields, do error messages show up next to the field, and does the form actually send? If there's an email link: does it open a mail app with your address spelled correctly, and is the address also visible as plain text for people without a mail app set up? If there's a booking tool: can you pick a time and confirm without pinching and zooming?

5 · Payment

Does the payment link open, show the right amount and the right product name, and offer payment methods that work on a phone? Can you get back to your page afterwards? If you can, make a real low-value test payment and refund it, or use the provider's test mode. Check that your business name on the checkout matches the page (see who is behind the page).

6 · After the order

Does a confirmation page or email arrive, and does it say what happens next and when? Did your own notification arrive, in the inbox you actually read and not in spam? Do the steps you described match what really happened? (See the how it works guide.)

Finally, tap every link in the footer: legal notice, privacy, terms, social profiles. None of them should end on a 404 page.

What usually breaks

What to fix first

  1. Anything that stops the order: broken form, wrong email address, dead or wrong payment link, notifications that never arrive.
  2. Anything that hides the main action: overlays, a button below several screens of text, tap targets too small to hit.
  3. Anything that makes the page hard to read: small text, low contrast, sideways scrolling.
  4. Speed: compress or resize the largest images first; that is usually the biggest win on a small site.

After each fix, run the stage again on the phone. A fix that works on the laptop can still fail on mobile.

Copy-paste phone test checklist

Paste it into a note on your phone and tick it off. Run it after every change to the page, and once a month anyway.
